With two major ideas in mind, being informed about medicine and healthcare and finding a role model early in life, the Junior Medicine Professionals (JuMP) Initiative was founded in August of 2022 by Shripriya and Shrinika Kalbhavi, who are currently students at Lynbrook High School and Miller Middle School, respectively. The JuMP Initiative aims to inspire a new generation of health professionals by bringing together students and medicine professionals and future medicine students, inviting them to speak to students throughout the year, and guiding students towards a future career in medicine.
The initiative was first piloted at Miller Middle School during the 2022-2023 school year through a student-run club, where Shripriya Kalbhavi served as the president while emphasizing the Three Cs as the core values of the organization: communicate, connect, and contribute. The JuMP Initiative communicates to students a variety of health professions by hosting presentations and activities to help students get to know the professions. The JuMP Initiative also connects students to current medical professionals and future medical professionals (premedical or medical students) to guide them towards futures in medicine. Lastly, the JuMP initiative inspires students to contribute back to their community by allowing them to understand and appreciate the importance and contributions of these health professions in the betterment of society. During the extremely successful first year of the JuMP club at Miller Middle School, over 100 active student members learned about several fields of medicine and professions, such as oncology, cardiology, endocrinology, etc., and participated in a variety of activities, such as team challenges, school showcases, and club promotion events. When it was time to demonstrate the knowledge that they had gained over the year and encourage other students to join the JuMP club, the students prepared posters, presentations, and interactive displays for students, teachers, and staff to visit, not only did they show that they had been communicated a variety of information by the JuMP curriculum but also communicated their knowledge to other students. The members also contributed to their community through this event as well.
